Is there much to do in New Zealand?

Backpacker SleepervansYes. New Zealand is lucky enough to have a wealth of outdoor activities on hand. You can hike through pristine native bush, walk in active geothermal areas, raft or kayka in crystal clear rivers, conquer mountains and at the end of the day, bathe in bubbling mineral pools. The more adventurous traveller could also ski a volcano, walk on a glacier, shoot the rapids in a jet boat or scuba dive in our beautiful, scenic waters.

We also have plenty of activities for these who are not so focused on the outdoors.
For exploring a traditional Maori village amongst the geysers and hot pools of our incredible geothermal areas, enjoying internationally renowned food and wine trails, or visiting the many exceptional museums, galleries and historic buildings scattered throughout the country. And even after having done all that, you’ll have barely scatched the surface.

Is it hard to find you way around?

No. New Zealand has a clearly signposted and comprehensive road system as well as internal flights to every major city in the country. If you should stray off the beaten track and lose your way, just ask a local, they’ll point you in the right direction. We’re friendly lot.

Which side of the road do New Zealanders drive on?

All of the main international car companies operate throughout New Zealand plus there are many reputable local companies. You will need to be twenty one years of age to hire a car or campervan. A current driver’s licence from your home country or an International Licence (in English text) will be required. Then the country is all yours.

New Zealand also offers a wide range of other transport options, including local airliners, trains, coaches, travel passes and much more. Visit the transport section of www.newzealand.com to find out more.

How far will my money go?

Like our friendly service, a long way. If you’re travelling with the your Countries Dollar than you’ll find yourself on the positive end of a favourable exchange rate. Petrol cost about the same as it would at home. We don’t expect tips in New Zealand it has been our pleasure to serve you.

What is the weather like?

Backpacker SleepervansNew Zealand has four definite seasons. Summer is warm and perfect for all water activities with temperatures averaging mid to high twenties Celsius (75 - 90 F). Spring is an excellent time to explore any part of the country as temperatures range fro 15 to 20 C (55 - 70 F), Autumn is ideal for enjoying the great outdoors and you can ski your heart out in winter with temperatures anywhere from 5 to 15 C (40 - 60 F), Naturally this depends on where you are in the country (the North is generally warmer than the South) but as you can see we don’t normally experience extreme temperatures.

What should I wear?

Dress casually, you’re on holiday. However, if you wish to visit some of our world class restaurants and nightspots then something more formal would be appropriate.

If you’re travelling in summer then you’ll spend most days in shorts and tee shirts, although it is advisable to pack a light jacket or sweater in case the weather turns cooler (especially in the high country). The locals often wear layers of light clothing so they can warm up or cool down as necessary.

Pack a warm winter clothing if you are visiting between May and September or if you are planning to visit one of our mountain rangers. Rain can occur at any time of the year but hopefully not to long. And if you get caught out by the weather, then it’s a great excuse to buy some unique New Zealand fashion. Our internationally designers have ranges from the chic to the practical depending on your mood.

How safe is New Zealand?

New Zealand is considered one of the safest destinations in the world. We have one poisonous spider that the majority of the population have never seen and no dangerous animals. Crime is low and problems can generally be avoided by using commons sense. The water in our cities and towns is excellent and in all cases tap water is fresh and safe to drink. When you’re visiting our great out doors, it’s a good idea to boil or treat water from rivers and lakes to be on the safe side.

Do I need a passport or a Visa to visit New Zealand?

Australian citizens just need a valid passport to visit New Zealand, but all other visitors must carry a passport that is valid for at least three months from the date when you intend to leave the country. Visas are not required for Australians or for most visitors who are staying less than three months but it is to check your requirements on the New Zealand Immigration Service website. For longer stays a Visitor’s Visa may be required.

Can I experience the Maori culture?

Backpacker SleepervansKia ora ) hello)! Maori culture is an important part of the New Zealand experience, and you can immerse yourself in this dynamic culture in a variety of different ways. From the hongi (the pressing of the noses to signify sharing the breath of life), to the powhiri (traditional welcome ceremony), the experience will highlight the wonder of our indigenous culture. Spend the day with a Maori guide walking through New Zealand’s natural bush walks and hear the stories and histories of this spiritual land. Or visit a local marae (tribal meeting place) and watch as Maori showcase their skills through carving and weaving and traditional performance art. You could even sample the succulent foods from a hangi (food prepared in the traditional Maori way). Nau mai, haere mai (come on over)!

Hobbit sightings are rare but you can visit their natural habitats.
